A Proud History - 1940's

1940
In January the combined activities of the field centers, clinics, Flo Brown Memorial Laboratory and the Department of Speech Sciences at the University of Wichita were officially named the Institute of Logopedics.
1942
1942
By early 1942, eight years after the Institute’s inception, almost 3,500 people had received services at the facility.
1945
Support for the Institute began coming from other sectors. Lamba Tau Delta, a national social and philanthropic sorority, adopted the Institute as its service project.
1946
The Institute was playing an important role in the post-war effort as one of six institutions nationwide offering speech and hearing rehabilitation for wounded veterans.

Two more national organizations adopted the Institute as their philanthropic project – Sigma Alpha Sorority, a businesswomen’s organization, and Kappa Alpha Theta women’s college fraternity.

1949
The Institute’s new facility – 44 buildings on 40 acres in northeast Wichita – opened its doors on September 28. Alpha Iota, an international business honorary, and the Kansas Council of Epsilon Sigma Alpha international social and philanthropic sorority, adopt the Institute as their philanthropic projects.
